La Cumbre 2012

La Cumbre

It is with great pleasure the National Convention Committee of Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Incorporated announce the details of our biennial retreat La Cumbre! La Cumbre, meaning “The Summit” in Spanish, symbolizes our organization transcending in our pillars of scholarship, service and sisterhood. The first La Cumbre was held in 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a great success thanks to the innovation of Sister Loha Periera Melton.

Keeping with this initiative, the National Board created The La Cumbre Committee to continue this effort. This year La Cumbre 2012 will be held in Memphis, Tennessee from June 22nd-June 24th . Our theme, “Moving Forward In Sisterhood” highlights the progress of our organization and is a special time for all alumnae and collegians, active or inactive, to gather and celebrate our sisterhood in a fun and memorable environment.

Registration is only $100 by April 13th and includes a t-shirt, retreat materials, lunch, and a raffle prize for one of our attendees! More information regarding hotel reservations and payment will be available soon. If you have any questions please contact our committee chair Jasmin Thurston at ukdua@deltaphimu.org. See you soon in June in the city of Blues!

Spread the L.O.V.E. Campaign and our October Founder Spotlight: Rosa Ana Fernandez-Mills

In September, Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. launched the Spread the L.O.V.E. campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to start the excitement early in regards to our 20th Anniversary that will happen August 28, 2011. Every month leading to our 20th anniversary we will have some fun announcements so stay tuned and be sure to participate as need be!

Enjoy getting to know Rosa Ana Fernandez-Mills (or as some of us know her as Rosy Mills) up close and personal!

1.  Being a young sorority we are blessed to have our founders present.  Please share with us how Delta Phi Mu came to be.  Why did you decide to embark on this adventure?
One day, Rosita approached me about starting a Hispanic sorority. I left for college with a stereotypical idea of what sororities were, and had no interest in that. I planned on getting my degree and moving on to the next chapter. However, when I did get to Purdue, I felt homesick pretty quickly. I was in a different world. Growing up I really didn't feel like a minority, because in EC you were either Hispanic or Black. When I got to Purdue, I finally realized what all that "discrimination" they taught us in school was all about. So when Rosita talked about helping the Hispanic community and helping other Hispanic freshman girls not feel so alone, I embraced the idea with a very tight grip.

2.  All of us have gone through the process which of course included knowing information about our founders.  What is something Delta Phi Mu doesn't know about you but you would like to share?
I love to read "series" books - i.e. James Patterson's "Women's Murder Club", Sue Grafton's "A is for Alibi", "B is for Burglar". Oh, and they must be mysteries.

3.  How did Delta Phi Mu impact you while you were in college?
Delta Phi Mu taught to separate business from pleasure (friendship). There were plenty of times where I disagreed with my sisters, but we remained really good friends.

4.  How has Delta Phi Mu impacted you now?
Today, I am in awe of the impact that it has had in so many women in the last 20 years. It has expanded my networking family.  Just the other night I had a very pleasant dinner with Loha P. Melton and Amelia Mota, neither of whom I would have ever met if it weren't for Delta Phi Mu.

5.  What are you doing currently?
Currently, I am a stay at home mom. I volunteer at my children's school. I get involved with the local Hispanic community organizations.

Hispanics can change their future through education

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in New York City, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) will host the Alumni Hall of Fame; Education Summit

The Alumni Hall of Fame Gala highlights the power of a higher education degree.   Over 50,000 HSF alumni have received scholarships and changed the course of their lives.  Notable past inductees include Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, Neurosurgeon at John Hopkins, the Honorable Antonia Garza Jr.; United States Ambassador of Mexico and Honorable Dr. Richard H. Carmona, Former Surgeon General of the United States.

HSF's mission is to strengthen America by advancing the college education of Hispanic Americans. The vision is to help every Latino household with a college degree.  HSF has an integrated program of community outreach and education. They aid in affordability via scholarships, college retention and career opportunities.

More than $300 million have been awarded through HSF in over 100,000 scholarships. Two-thirds of these recipients were the first in their family to attend college.  Delta Phi Mu applauds the efforts of organizations such as the HSF.  We encourage all sisters to pass along this information to continue to empower others, particularly young women seeking education as a tool to improve their lives.  Higher education is at the very top of our list.

For scholarship information visit the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) website.  There are scholarships NOW OPEN.  Submit your application and get cash for college!

Great news for college students seeking loans!

This is a great time to become a college student.  In hard economic times, many people decide to gain new knowledge. For those who've decided to pursue a college education, there are great news, particularly as an undergradute.

The federal government has new interest rates on student loans and these will get cheaper over the next couple of years under the Stafford Loan program.  This is an amazing offer.  Make sure you use these loans to the max if you qualify before seeking any private loans for college.

What are these incredibly low interest rates?

Academic Year              Subsidized Rate         Unsubsidized Rates
2009-10                        5.60%                        6.80%
2010-11                        4.50%                        6.80%
2011-12                        3.40%                        6.80%
2012-13                        6.80%                        6.80%

What are Stafford Loans?
Stafford Loans are federal student loans made available to college and university students to supplement personal and family resources, scholarships, grants, and work-study. Nearly all students are eligible to receive Stafford loans regardless of credit. Stafford loans may be subsidized by the U.S. Government or unsubsidized depending on the student's need.

Who can apply?
You must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen accepted for enrollment or attending a school that participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Additionally:
•You must have submitted a FAFSA to be eligible for a Stafford loan
•For subsidized Stafford, you must have financial need as determined by your school
•You must be enrolled or plan to enroll at least half time
