La Cumbre, meaning “The Summit” in Spanish, symbolizes our organization transcending in our pillars of scholarship, service and sisterhood. The first La Cumbre was held in 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a great success thanks to the innovation of Sister Loha Periera Melton.

Keeping with this initiative, the National Board created The La Cumbre Committee to continue this effort. This year La Cumbre 2012 will be held in Memphis, Tennessee from June 22nd-June 24th . Our theme, “Moving Forward In Sisterhood” highlights the progress of our organization and is a special time for all alumnae and collegians, active or inactive, to gather and celebrate our sisterhood in a fun and memorable environment.

Registration is only $100 by April 13th and includes a t-shirt, retreat materials, lunch, and a raffle prize for one of our attendees! More information regarding hotel reservations and payment will be available soon. If you have any questions please contact our committee chair Jasmin Thurston at ukdua@deltaphimu.org. See you soon in June in the city of Blues!

Wear Red Challenge 2012 has begun!!

In keeping with our National Philanthropy, we are proud to announce the continuation of last years picture project in support of The Heart Truth. I left for college with a stereotypical idea of what sororities were, and had no interest in that. I planned on getting my degree and moving on to the next chapter. However, when I did get to Purdue, I felt homesick pretty quickly. I was in a different world. Growing up I really didn't feel like a minority, because in EC you were either Hispanic or Black. When I got to Purdue, I finally realized what all that "discrimination" they taught us in school was all about. So when Rosita talked about helping the Hispanic community and helping other Hispanic freshman girls not feel so alone, I embraced the idea with a very tight grip.

2. All of us have gone through the process which of course included knowing information about our founders. What is something Delta Phi Mu doesn't know about you but you would like to share?

I love to read "series" books - i.e. James Patterson's "Women's Murder Club", Sue Grafton's "A is for Alibi", "B is for Burglar". I've had a love-hate relationship with all the yummy foods that have made me miserable at times. We all know the feeling of looking in the mirror and seeing the extra pounds or the button that flew off into the distance and the zipper that won't stay up. The holidays are a fun time but the food binge hangover starts in January when everybody starts making a new resolution. Of course, aren't these resolutions barely ever new? Haven't you found yourself resolving the same thing year after year?

Well, as my sorority recently partnered with The Heart Truth, I committed to listen to my body and look into natural and inexpensive solutions to improve my health. I am not interested in looking like a Barbie, but rather consciously decided and pledge to be healthy and love my heart in 2010 and beyond. Six pounds lighter and 3 inches smaller, I am confident, I've discovered a great new way to reach this goal. This is only a start, I have more work to do to obtain my ideal weight and maximum health, but so far, I find it simple and effective.

I was watching TV late one night when I discovered Dr. Roizen and what seemed an extremely different approach to discussing food and the effects it has on the body. As soon as I finished watching the show, I knew this would work for me. I am talking about YOU: On a diet.

If you log onto the Real Age website you can click on the tools, tips and instructions for this diet. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz (a doctor on the show, The Doctors) partnered up for this waist management project. I hate to call it a diet because it is NOT a fad diet or a GET THIN QUICK promise. NO, rather it focuses on a natural and logical approach to food. It talks about the way nature intended food to serve our bodies. I hope it makes sense to you like it made sense to me. If it doesn't, no hard feelings. My hope is that you find the tools and knowledge that can equip you to achieve your ideal weight, feel good about yourself and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some things I learned that have proven beneficial for me:
Avoid the following foods whenever possible
1. Saturated fats
2. Trans fats
3. Any grain except 100% whole grains
4. Enriched foods
5. Simple sugars

Walk 30 minutes a day
This is by far where I have seen the most difference in my body. There is something magical about walking 30 minutes a day. Can't do it everyday, no sweat, do it as often as possible.

Try to incorporate beneficial oils in moderation. These are helpful in combatting the LDL levels, therefore aiding with maintaining a good cholesterol level. For a great explanation of good and bad cholesterol click here for this American Heart Association page.
Dr. Roizen recommends:
Avocados
Olive Oil
Almonds

And a couple of tricks that have worked for me to curb hunger pangs:
Mustard
Cinnamon

Hope this helps you. I am on a mission to get very healthy. It's a great tool towards great longevity and quality of life. If you have any helpful information, a success story, a healthy recipe or a question or comment about this topic, do not hesitate in posting it or contacting me directly at publicrelations@deltaphimu.org because Delta Phi Mu would like to share it.

Delta Phi Mu is on a mission to empower women through education and knowledge about healthy choices. We have are very proud of our partnership with The Heart Truth and support them on their mission to make a difference in the lives of women.

Join us, February 5th as we launch our Wear Red Day Picture Project to benefit the The Heart Truth. Read the full instructions on this blog or visit our facebook fanpage.

S.H.A.L.O.M. and L.O.V.E. your hearts!

Cynthia Vinasco, Alumna
National Director of Public Relations
Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc.

Do you want to take a picture for a good cause?

Take a picture to support healthy hearts

Do you know someone who has suffered from heart disease? If you can, install a programmable thermostat. Every degree can alter your bill by 3 to 5%.

2. Adjust the water heater. Water heaters consume about 15% to 20% and it can become the 3rd largest expense of our utility bills, so if your water heater is out of date, it may be time to replace it with a new fuel efficient one. You can reduce your bill by as much as 30% by choosing an Energy Star qualified gas condensing model.

If not, try learning as much as you can about your particular type of water heater. Read the suggested temperature recommended by the manufacturer. Adjust the water heater setting to 120º which is a comfortable temperature. Also, consider insulating your water heater with a blanket and insualting pipe material sold at home improvement stores. Visit the government energy website at http://www.energy.gov/ for other energy saving ideas.

3. Change the settings when you go on vacation. Many water heaters have suggested temperatures for extended leaves to save more energy. Some even have a "Vacation" mode. Check your thermostats before you take off and make sure to turn off all the lights and unplug all the electric items such as TVs, computers, chargers and coffee makers!

4. Use coupons for products that are on sale. The smartest ways to use coupons is to use them when products are being sold at their lowest price. There are strategies using coupons wisely to maximize your savings, but once you learn the tricks, it will only take you 15 to 20 minutes a week to gather your coupons. A great resource is http://www.couponmom.com/. Another website that allows you to upload the coupons of your choice on your preferred customer cards and automatically scans the coupon at the register is http://www.shortcuts.com/. Paperless coupons are the newest trend!

Watch this really cool video on how to maximize the use of coupons!

5. Take a shopping list and do not shop outside that list! Ask yourself if you are an impulse buyer. Admit your shopping pitfalls and write down your needs list and wants list for the items that make the most sense. Start with your needs shopping list and don't shop the wants list unless you have budgeted money left over. Use the 10 second rule at the store. If you put it in your cart, wait ten seconds and decide if that is a need or simply a want you can live without. By putting the item back on the shelf you will feel empowered by your intelligent choices. Every penny counts.

6. Focus on preventive health. Americans are amongst the top developed countries in the world with a new problem. We are getting fatter and fatter. Our fast-paced life and instant gratification attitude is affecting our health. If you have any spare time spend it on a free activity that helps you with preventive care. Start walking. Just 30 minutes 3 times per week can help make a huge difference, although some resources say 10,000 steps per day are ideal. Eating less saturated fats, trans fats, simple sugars and enriched foods will help lower your cholesterol and weight.

Medical research also shows that weight around the mid-waist is the most dangerous and risky for health issues such as cancers and heart disease. Measure your waist. Women should on average measure 32" or less for a healthier outlook and men should stay at 35"or less. Watch that belly fat! Eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, and consuming oils such as olive oil, almonds and avocados as well as reducing your meat intake by replacing it with more fish and chicken can help. Take a daily dose of vitamins and drink plenty of water. Being healthy is a lot cheaper than prescription medicine and copays at doctors visits! Prevent heart disease and know your numbers - visit, our partners, the Heart Truth for more info.

7. Change your light bulbs. Yes, CFL (compact flourescent lights) and LED (light-emmitting diodes) lights can be an investment, but in the long run you'll save a lot of energy and money. One way to start is to find out which lights you use the most in your home and replace those first. Then commit to only using your new environmentally friendlier light bulbs. Turn off the lights if you are not in the room or commit to using more natural light whenever possible.

8. Store your credit cards in the freezer. The first solution to credit card debt is to stop using them! One way to prevent impulse buys is to freeze your credit cards and stick to using them for emergencies only. Place your credit card in a ziploc baggie and fill it with water to freeze. When an emergency arises, take the baggie out and sit there and wait for it to unfreeze. During that period, think carefully if this so-called emergency truly is an emergency. Using credit cards for survival is a thing of the past, avoid it at all costs! (no pun intended)

9. Cancel unused club memberships. Did you sign up for a club that you used only once or twice, but still pay the monthly membership? It's time to think of all the little expenses that add up at the end of the month and call to cancel them right away. Look for your credit card statements for some that you might have completely forgotten and that are automatically being charged month after month.

10. Design a get-out-of debt plan and consider it your LAW. Most financial experts agree that writing every expense down is the beginning of a debt plan. First, find out where your money is going and decide where YOU want it to go. A debt plan is very empowering. Here are some great resources to get you started to realizing your dreams and start controlling your money. You have the power.

Suze Orman resources
Budgeting Annually instead of Monthly by CNN's Clark Howard
The 7 Baby Steps to Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey

Written by Cynthia Vinasco

<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist?
The BBB offers the following advice:

If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a hand held device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.

Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Education plays a major role in the future of America. Education is the wild card that will change the name of the game. Not only is it important to finish high school, but to truly get ahead in life it is eminent that students continue on to higher education. However, these days with such a tough economy and a sea of job-seeking individuals, students must do more than obtain a degree. They must be well-rounded leaders with experience and commitment, ready to stand out from the crowd.

The sad truth is that while there are more minority students entering higher education institutions, there are still low levels of graduating minority students and professionals with high-level, high-paying jobs.

In the book Perspectives on Minority women in Higher Education, by Lynne Brodie Welch, the author repeatedly denotes that few ethnic minorities can be found in higher education, particularly minority women. It is suggested that subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination against these can be identified. This is particularly said of the experience of minority women, who often complain that "they have two-strikes against them".

The book also emphasizes on the need for a networking and support of minority women in higher education. While there have been some advancements since the book was published, many institutions of today still cannot claim to have a well-developed support network to help minority student retention. This type of support would serve to encourage and motivate minority women to continue their education, to elevate their level of expectations and to graduate to become role models for future generations.

That is exactly our goal here at Delta Phi Mu. We know that the statistics are still staggering, but we are dedicated to making a difference in the campuses where we exist so that the students entering the universities feel at home. Hopefully, we can help them have a sense of belonging. We want these women to succeed in their academic goals in college, to dedicate some of their time to giving back to their community and showcase themselves as leaders. These leaders will be constantly creating a better tomorrow, one with more understanding about their true potential.

Our lifetime commitment helps us to continue on a legacy that truly makes a difference for the younger generation. Alumane members are given the opportunity to give back when they become successful professionals. This creates a cycle of success handed down from one generation to the next.

Our organization is growing and evolving each day. We are interested in high standards of quality. We promote education and try to create a richer experience for our future leaders. We are Delta Phi Mu. We were founded upon the pillars of scholarship, service and sisterhood. We are a success, one woman at a time.

We promote higher education to all women!

Purdue University Global Discovery Humans have been captivated by their intricacies and have long studied their behaviors as they seem to live a purposeful and joyful life. They always seem to be alert, active and happy. Their intelligence is above other animal species. They don´t lounge around and wait for things to happen. They are doers; they make a splash into their world. We, at Delta Phi Mu, wanna make a splash into ours.

In an online journal written by a dolphin-lover, we can note that dolphins have a lot to teach us. Here´s what the author writes:

These are some of the basic priciples they teach:

Supporting each other.

Cooperating, no competition.

Taking care of Nature and it takes care of us.

We are more than our physical bodies, we are able to communicate.

Use your telepathic abilities.

Sound (vibrations) can heal us. Use them, study them.

Live Simply.

Breathe deeply all the time and avoid going places where you can't.

Sleep on your own schedule.

Eat what's in your environment.

Always smile it makes you more beautiful.

Eye contact is a communication between souls.

You have control over your emotions – express the good ones, analyze the bad ones. Don't blame others.

Keep active.

Enjoy making love.

Be curious.

Teach the young people.

Play more than anything else, no matter where you are!

Respect your family.

Share your feelings of love with everyone. Don't be stingy.

Be fearless and face the things that worry you with Faith.

Use your 6th sense and beyond.

Have integrity.

Love yourself.

Keep your sense of humor.

Maybe there is something in examining the nature of our human creation. Maybe we can realize that a simple life that is in balance with nature will maximize our true capacity, our true potential.

Source: http://www.joanocean.com/Dolphins.html

La Esperanza del Futuro está en las Manos de la Mujer

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nM3FmgtT1mw/StfNs2ZxNFI/AAAAAAAAAEA/WMEbGAjFNDA/s320/La+Esperanza+del+Futuro.jpg" />"The hope of the future is in the hands of the woman" is the motto for this Latina-based, inclusive sorority. It is the leadership of women that paves the way to a successful future. Women serve as mothers, nurturers, gatherers, leaders, politicians, teachers, business professionals, homemakers, friends, sisters and so much more. Our development and the advancement in our educational levels is what promotes us and our legacy after us. Through education and diligent preparation, we guarantee ourselves a brighther future. We are not a group of women that meet once a month for social reasons or a club that plans an annual community service event. We are so much more than that. While we are at college, Delta Phi Mu is our home away from home. We work on our inner core and our interpersonal development. We build relationships and work on our lifetime goals. We take pride in our focus for scholarship and service. However, it is our development as leaders, and character as movers and shakers that impact our present and shape our future. Our lifetime commitment means that our bond never fades or dies. We are Delta Phi Mu. Our hands hold the hearts that shine the light of hope for our future.

Delta Phi Mu commemorates its National Founders during Hispanic Heritage Month

Today, Purdue University has the one of the largest Greek communities in the nation, with fraternities and sororities serving students from different backgrounds and ethnicities. However, up until the early 1990s, that wasn’t the case. In the year 1991, five women came together, united by the needs of Latinos, who lacked a voice, a unifying organization, and a support network to reduce the dropout rate of the Latino student population.

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nM3FmgtT1mw/StUQ00NBbDI/AAAAAAAAADw/orGvjacH8yE/s320/Founders+in+the+beginning.jpg" />On August 28, 1991 at Purdue University, while enrolled as full-time students, five outstanding women, who recognized the need to support and guide women of Hispanic/Latino descent, came together to create an organization that would carry on a legacy to aid Latinos and other communities to empower themselves through education. Today, Delta Phi Mu, a Latina-based, inclusive sorority accepts women of all races, ethnicities, color and creed who share the utmost desire to succeed in life and in the professional world. The sorority does not consider itself a social organization, but rather a philanthropic organization with a fundamental purpose to aid in improving the graduation statistics and future professional success of underrepresented populations in the United States.

While Latinos have made gains in several areas of education in the last 20 years, there are still apparent gaps in performance between Latino and non-Latino students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics and Status and Trends in the Education of Hispanics, Hispanic students have higher high school dropout rates and lower high school completion rates than White or Black students. Hispanic enrollments in colleges and universities increased between 1980 and 2000. However, a smaller proportion of Hispanics complete college compared to Whites and Blacks. Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. is only spurned on by these statistics and as an organization is motivated to continue its mission of empowering Hispanic women as well as ALL women in higher education. Delta Phi Mu embraces and cherishes women of other ethnicities who share this concern. The sorority serves as a powerful tool for the betterment of any woman who wants to promote herself through the pillars of service, scholarship and sisterhood. These are the pillars that serve as our foundation.

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nM3FmgtT1mw/StUQ-HdSL4I/AAAAAAAAAD4/pJGbpDiFJKU/s320/Founders.jpg" />

For this, reason Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. wants to publicly thank these five women, our National Founding Mothers, for their courageous and outstanding efforts. These women have made a difference in the lives of others and thus we commemorate these efforts during this national celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month, which was enacted into public law on August 17, 1988, only three years prior to the sorority´s inception.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in September and October

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nM3FmgtT1mw/SsoiapzWOkI/AAAAAAAAADo/4EZ-Tlz0KdU/s200/national_hispanic_heritage_month_card-p137576224448963992q0yk_400.jpg" />

What is Hispanic Heritage Month and why is it celebrated?

During the month of September, the efforts and contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States are celebrated. This observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Hispanic Heritage Week became Hispanic Heritage Month to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nM3FmgtT1mw/SsohpNlTYZI/AAAAAAAAADg/DnZpY5AEsxY/s200/latin-americanflags_475x319.jpg" />September 15 was chosen as the starting point because it notes the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The very next day on September 16, Mexico celebrates and is followed by Chile on September 18 and Belize on September 21. Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. According to Rhiannon Vela, former Chapter President, “The purpose of the show is to open up and let the Purdue students experience the Latino culture”.

During the month of September, we celebrate the efforts and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month covers a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. This national celebration was enacted into public law on August 17, 1988.

This year is Rhiannon’s last year as an undergraduate member. As she thinks back about the earlier years of the show, she attributes much of its success to the Latino Cultural Center. She notes, “When the LCC (Latino Cultural Center) opened up in 2003, they helped us with finding acts and with awarding us with grants for the show. The show would not be what it is today without the LCC.”

It takes a lot of time and dedication to put on this show year after year. Active sorority members research the organizations on campus and seek donations from local community businesses. Performances are mostly from student-based organizations, and Delta Phi Mu is also grateful to receive donations such as food from a variety of local restaurants and audience members. Many talents are displayed at the show such as poetry readings, speakers and dancing. As Rhiannon puts it, “anything that displays and shows the Latino traditions is welcomed to perform for our show”.

The Hispanic Heritage Show is the highlight of a series of weekly activities hosted by Delta Phi Mu at Purdue. The show is free and opens its door from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday. “I'm happy to say that I'm very proud of what we have achieved through this show and that we have kept the tradition alive the past 11 years”, Rhiannon adds.

The Purdue University Alpha Chapter was founded on August 28, 1991 by five Hispanic women: Guadalupe Acevez, Rosa Ana Fernandez-Mills, Sylvia Medellin, Annette Zoe Rosa, and Rosita Serrano. Delta Phi Mu is a Latina-based, inclusive sorority. The Founding Mothers’ mission of empowering Hispanic professional women and other women through education became reality. These outstanding women sought to establish a foundation that served as a home away from home to ensure that high standards of ethics and education were a unifying goal of achieving success in life. Over the years, the sorority has expanded to other universities, and welcomed women of different ethnicities and backgrounds to serve as support, guidance, assistance, love and friendship for one another.

2009 Heart Walk

Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc Alpha Chapter at the 2009 Heart Walk in Lafayette, Indiana!

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Detla Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. loves the American Heart Association and everything that it stands for because it cherishes young healthy hearts and educates everyone on how to protect hearts for life!
